Ether Monument is dedicated.
June 27, 1868
Artist: John Quincy Adams Ward. Formally the Good Samaritan Monument and also known as The Death of Pain, it is located in the Boston Public Garden. The cost of its creation was donated by merchant Thomas Lee. Because of the controversy over who should be credited with the discovery of the drug, no name appears on the statue, prompting Oliver Wendell Holmes to quip that it could be called the “Either monument.”
